Both Houses of Congress Vote Congratulations to Israel on Anniversary

Both houses of the U.S. Congress adopted nearly identical resolutions today congratulating Israel on the 20th anniversary of its independence and expressing hope that Israel and its Arab neighbors will meet soon to reach a peaceful settlement of their conflict. The Senate resolution was introduced jointly by the Democratic Majority Leader, Sen. Mike Mansfield, of Montana and Republican Minority Leader, Sen. Everett Dirksen, of Illinois. The House resolution was offered by Thomas Morgan, Pennsylvania Democrat who is chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and Francis Bolton, Ohio Republican and a ranking member of the committee.

Both resolutions recalled that the American people had supported the creation of Israel 20 years ago. The House resolution noted that since its establishment, Israel has defended us right to exist while establishing democratic institutions serving the cause of freedom and human advancement.

In New York, Ambassador Yosef Tekoah, head of the Israel mission to the United Nations, and Consul General Michael Arnon tendered an Independence Day reception to members of the diplomatic corps, United Nations officials, the press and communal leaders.

In London tonight, Ambassador Aharon Remez, of Israel held a gala Independence Day reception at the Embassy attended by a member of the royal family, a dozen Cabinet members and the diplomatic chiefs of mission of 50 countries. The Government contingent was headed by Foreign Secretary Michael Stewart and Lord President of the Council, Richard H. S. Crossman. The royal family was represented by Prince Michael of Kent.

In Brussels, Ambassador Amiel E. Najar gave an Independence Day reception attended by the presidents of the Chamber of Representatives and of the Senate, members of the diplomatic corps, officials of the European Economic Community, the Apostolic Nuncio and leaders of Belgium’s Jewish community.

Argentine Government officials, Israeli diplomats and local businessmen attended an Independence Day reception in Buenos Aires aboard the Israeli freighter, Sabracore while the vessel was loading Argentine products that will go on display at the 11th International Trade Fair in Tel Aviv next month. More elaborate celebrations were to be held ashore there tonight.

Members of Ghana’s National Liberation Council and an array of ranking government officials, army officers and tribal chiefs attended an Independence Day reception in Accra given by Israel’s Ambassador A. Cohen. Lt. Gen. J. A. Ankrah, chairman of the National Liberation Council, sent a message of congratulations to President Zalman Shazar of Israel in which he congratulated the people of Israel and expressed good wishes for their peace, prosperity and progress.
