Thousands of British Jews flocked to synagogues today to observe the national “Day of Prayer,” marking the fourth anniversary of the outbreak of the war. Similar observances were held in Protestant and Catholic churches.
Speaking at Manchester, Chief Rabbi Joseph Hertz declared that “only a miracle saved England in 1940 from becoming a “Vichy England” which would have meant a Nazi-dominated world and the deportation of Britain’s Jewish children to the slaughterhouse of Poland.”
