A stern warning to British Jewry to adopt “emergency measures” in the face of a growing threat from “the forces of prejudice and evil” was issued here today by Sir Barnett Janner president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews.
Reporting to a meeting of the Board here on recent critical developments affecting British Jewry, Sir Barnett said that the fundamental feature of neo-Fascism and neo-Nazism was that they were now, to a large extent, internationally organized. “European, North European and other international movements had been formed, and linked with organizations outside Europe,” he declared.
Reporting on the recent trials and executions of Jews charged by Soviet authorities with economic crimes, Sir Barnett reiterated the Board’s appeal to the Soviet Government to “mitigate the severity of the sentences having regard to the offenses for which they were inflicted.” He appealed to the Soviet authorities “to conduct a campaign of enlightenment against anti-Semitism and, in other ways, to allay the apprehensions which are widely felt regarding the position of the Jewish community in the USSR.”
