Maj. Gen, E.L.M. Burns, chief of the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization in Palestine, declared in a statement this week-end that Egypt is still insisting on “additional points” before it agrees to the Nitzana-El Auja pacification proposals worked out here early in November between Gen. Burns and Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold, with the full backing of the United States, Britain and France.
Gen. Burns’ statement, issued here and in Jerusalem, reported that he had held meetings for two days in Cairo with the Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs, as well as with Cairo’s Minister of Defense, in an effort to obtain “reduction of tension” in the area of the Nitzana-El Auja demilitarized zone.
“The discussions, “Gen. Burns reported, “centered about certain additional points put forward by Egypt for consideration in connection with the situation in the demilitarized and certain points regarding Israel’s position in relation to the proposals.”
