J.H. Blackmore, leader of the Social Credit Group, demanded in the house of commons today that the government open Canada’s doors to immigration. He asserted that the government was concerned with the seven-year unemployment problem instead of the future. The unemployment problem must be solved first, Mr. Blackmore said, but the country will never advance until its open spaces are filled with a flow of immigrants.
News from Melbourne has reached the Canadian Department of Immigration to the effect that “no special facilities will be granted for the admission of groups of Jewish migrants to Australia. Since Germany occupied Austria the Minister has been asked about the position of Jewish nationals who wish to settle in Australia. His decision in each case will be considered on its merits.” This statement was issued on behalf of Australian minister of immigration, McEwen.
