Jews helping Arabs? It’s happening here. The project is sponsored by CARE of California and it entails raising Jewish money to help Arabs–small farmers, mechanics, and tradesmen–who live on the West Bank get off the Israeli welfare rolls.
The interest-free loans, to be administered Jointly by CARE and the Israeli government, will enable the recipients to buy equipment, implements and seeds and eventually stand on their own feet economically.
CARE, which started out by sending relief packages to war-torn Europe and has now switched to International relief and development projects, has sent letters to 175 private Jewish foundations in California soliciting support for the project.
F. Peter Freed, the project’s volunteer chairman, said he hit on the Idea of approaching Jewish philanthropies after consulting with Israeli government officials.
