A national textbook commission will examine textbooks used in Catholic elementary and high schools for racial, ethnic or religious bias, the National Catholic Conference for Inter-racial Justice announced here. The commission was initiated by the NCCIJ’s department of educational services. Its members include classroom teachers, parents, academicians and textbook writers under the direction of S. Margaret Ellen Traxler.

The first reports of the study will begin in late January. The NCCIJ conceded that “anti-Semitism and racial bigotry exists in texts and other learning tools in Catholic classrooms,” adding that “sporadic ad hoc vigilante groups are not always best qualified to do the evaluation.”
