Chanukah was celebrated in Sarrebourg at a special service to which 15th Corps troops and local residents were invited. This was the first Jewish holiday service held in Alsace-Lorraine since the Germans occupied the area in 1939.
The town synagogue was littered with the clothing of men, women and children whose whereabouts are unknown. These garments are now being distributed by the French Red Cross. The Chanukah service was conducted by Col. Gustav Shellhase of Detroit, Mich., and Capt. David Eiohorn of Tallahasse, Fla., two of the chaplains attached to the corps.
