The triumphant conclusion of the Jewish Welfare Fund campaign for $130,000 was being hailed by Jewish leaders here today as one of the most heartening events in the community’s history.

At a victory dinner Monday night, attended by 400, it was disclosed that the goal sought had been exceeded by $5,845. Prior to the dinner, the campaign had ### $112,000.

The successful termination of the drive was greeted enthusiastically by Rabbi Abba Hillel Silver, general chairman, who said it had “restored to us our sense of our competence and our strength.”

RESULT HELD SIGNIFICANT

Comparing the result with less successful campaigns of the last few years, Rabbi Silver said that “this demonstrates that we have succeeded in regaining our self-confidence. It also signalizes release from a sense of defeatism. We had come to acquiesce in and submit to inadequate community undetakings.”

Other speakers at the dinner pointed to the result as evidencing a “rebirth” of community spirit and generosity toward private welfare undertakings.

The fund raised will be used for Jewish activities not covered by the Community Fund, a part being designated for the aid of Jewish refugees from Germany and the development of the Jewish National Homeland.

I. Edwin Goldwasser of New York was guest speaker at the dinner.
