Colin Powell is due to visit the Middle East. The U.S. secretary of state is set to leave Thursday on a tour that could include stops in Israel, the West Bank and Gaza Strip, Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Syria, the Israeli daily Ha’aretz reported. But Powell’s visit to Israel and the Palestinian Authority are contingent upon confirmation of the new P.A. Cabinet under Prime Minister-designate Mahmoud Abbas. Meanwhile, President Bush said he planned to invite Abbas to the White House “one of these days.”
