A joint resolution was introduced in the House today by Rep. Edna Kelly, N. Y. Democrat, providing that the President be requested to have the U. S. delegation to the United Nations call for an Arab-Israel peace conference. The resolution was referred to the Foreign Affairs Committee for study. It would go from House to Senate if approved.
Rep. Kelly, a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, headed a subcommittee which visited Israel last year. Her proposed resolution would cause the UN to “request the Security Council without delay to convene the Arab states and the State of Israel and other interested nations in a peace conference to discuss and bring about adjustment of the problems between the Arab states and the State of Israel which affect the peace and security of the area, including Arab refugees, boundaries and economic blockades.”
The President would be further requested to instruct the U. S. representative to the United Nations “to make such other recommendations to the Security Council or any other appropriate organ or body of the United Nations as will assist in alleviating the deteriorating situation between the Arab states and the State of Israel pending the convening of the peace conference.”
