Conservative Israeli officials criticized Foreign Minister Shimon Peres for meeting with Palestinian Authority President Yasser Arafat in Lisbon. The officials said the meeting undermined Israel’s position not to negotiate while violence continues. Peres defended the meeting, saying, “There should be a supreme and fearless effort” to stop the killing.
