A strong anti-Semitic agitation has broken out in Hungarian universities, resulting in the closing of one institution, the College of Forestry and Mine Engineering in Selm Eczbanya. Students there demanded the expulsion of the only two Jewish students, and the rector, unable to reach an agreement with them, closed the college.
In Szigedin the students demanded that Jews be excluded from classes in anatomy until Jewish bodies were furnished for dissection. As a Jewish community assumed the responsibility of burying the unidentified Jewish dead no bodies of Jews came into the hands of the authorities through the usual channels.
In Parliament the Minister of the Interior said: “The students act unlawfully, but I sympathize with them. We cannot punish Hungarian youths for a few Jews.”
