The proposal to register aliens in the U.S. was decried by Dr. Elias L. Soloman, President, opening the session of the 11th convention of the United Synagogues of America and the Women’s League today.
Dr. Soloman referred to the measure as the replica of the old Russian espionage system under the Czar. He stated the proposal would make aliens loathe America. He also condemned those plying the bootlegging trade, under religious cloak, and urged use of unfermented wine for Kiddush.
Rabbi Max Drob of New York deplored the use of lard as shortening by big bakeries, urging a campaign to expose bakeries using non-kosher ingredients.
A committee has been formed to issue a standard, uniform prayer book for the United Synagogue. The book is in process of preparation. Resolutions were adopted urging help for the Keren Hayesod and other agencies for the reconstruction of Palestine A committee on arbitration of industrial disputes is being urged.
The return to Sabbath observance was sponsored by Mrs. Chas. L. Hoffman, President, opening the Women’s League meeting. Greater responsibilities in the congregational activities for young people was stressed by Rabbi Israel Goldstein of New York, President of the Young Peoples League.
The total membership of congregations affiliated with the United Synagogue is 170, Rabbi Samuel M. Cohen, Executive Director, reported, who said is 400 delegates from this country and Canada present. The mass meeting tonight was addressed by Dr. Cyrus Adler, acting president of the Jewish Theological Seminary, and others.
