Meeting for the first time at this General Assembly session, the U.N. Political Committee voted an agenda today which placed the question of Palestine in fourth position. This means that the Palestine issue will, doubtless, not come up for discussion for at least another month, probably after the Economic Survey Mission report has reached the Assembly early in November. The vote was 52 to one, with three abstentions.
The Palestine issue consists at present of three parts–the Arab refugee question, protection of the Holy Places and internationalization of Jerusalem. It is expected that these will be treated as a “package.”
The General Assembly today scheduled the drawing up of a draft of missing persons convention for early consideration. Early discussion will also take place on reparations for injuries incurred in service of the U.N. The first item involves the frozen property of millions of Jews who perished at the hands of the Nazis. The second involves Israel’s financial obligations in the death of Count Folks Bernadotte and his aides.
