Leonid Tsypin, a Moscow Jew who went into hiding two weeks ago to avoid draft callup and was subsequently arrested and then waived for nearsightedness, has been picked up again, Jewish sources in the Soviet Union indicated today. Tsypin was reportedly imprisoned but this could not be confirmed. It was also learned that when Tsypin was detained last week and asked to sign a disavowal of activism, a Jewish secret policeman named Yaroslav Karpov told him: “You do want to get out of this KGB office, don’t you?” Tsypin did not sign, but was released.
Prof. Horst Gerson, of Groningen University in Amsterdam, who came to Holland as a refugee from Nazi Germany in 1935, has been awarded the annual “Joost Van Den Vondel” Prize of Muenster University in Westphalia for the promotion of Dutch-German culture. Prof. Gerson, born in Hamm, Westphalia in 1907, teaches art history.
