Indications that the drive inaugurated in this city recently to wipe out existing debts and mortgages on Jewish institutions and buildings, will go over the top, are seen in the fact that money in excess of the million and a half mark has already been pledged by the community’s leading Jewish business men, Dr. Ludwig B. Bernstein, executive director of the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies of Pittsburgh stated.
The sum, promised on condition that the remaining Jews of the city subscribe the difference between that already pledged and the amount necessary to clear the debts, approximately $1,850,000, will be turned over by the pledgees when the remainder is raised.
Plans to liquidate all existing deficits in this manner are being furthered through the Federation, which helps support 17 charitable organizations and which is headed by Irvin F. Lehman and Dr. Bernstein. The institutions which will be effected by presentations of money to the budget directors include the Jewish Home for the Aged, the Y. M. and Y. W. H. A., the Montefiore Hospital, the deficit of the Federation, Hebrew Institute of Pittsburgh and several other organizations.
