Edwin Shapiro, a president of the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society from 1979 to 1984, died Tuesday of cancer at 80. During his tenure at HIAS, Shapiro directed efforts to provide services for Jews leaving the Soviet Union and resettling in Israel, the United States and other countries.
