Egypt and Canada sighed Monday an agreement for peaceful nuclear cooperation, paving the way for future sales of Canadian nuclear reactors to Egypt. The 30-year accord was signed by Energy Ministers Maher Abaza of Egypt and Marc Lalonde of Canada, who also agreed to set up a committee to discuss the implementation of the agreement. Lalonde said that the Canadian government supports Egypt in its “search for lasting peace in the Mideast,” and described Egypt as a leader in efforts to reach a peaceful settlement in the Mideast. The nuclear accord with Egypt reverses Canada’s long-standing refusal to sell nuclear technology to Middle East countries. Canada’s policy in the future will be decided by the peaceful intentions and stable economic policies of a given country.
