Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak asked Yasser Arafat to delay his planned declaration of Palestinian statehood on May 4, 1999. The Israeli daily Ha’aretz reported that Mubarak told the Palestinian leader the move would disrupt Israel’s election campaign. Sources involved in the Cairo meeting said Arafat did not reply to the advice.
