The foundation of the first Palestine settlement by English Jews was laid at Gezer, near Ramleh, in the presence of representatives of the heads of the Palestine Administration, the British Army and Jewish and Arab notables.
Herbert Bentwitch, father of the Legal Secretary and leader of the English Maccabeans, presided over the ceremony which included an address by Sir Herbert Samuel, the High Commissioner. The latter emphasised the importance of the first colonization effort in Palestine by British Jews.
