The laborite Daily Herald predicted today that the new British policy on Palestine would involve abandonment of the partition proposal, intensification of military control until order is restored and, finally, convocation of an Arab-Jewish roundtable conference to develop a plan for the future administration of the country. The Herald said the policy would be announced by Colonial Secretary Malcolm Mac Donald at the opening session of the house of commons.
A suggestion that the united states take over the Palestine mandate from great Britain since it is “morally and financially better able to discharge the responsibility than any other nation,” mas advanced by the daily express.
“President Roosevelt, it is said, is in favor of retaining Palestine as a national home for the Jews without any limitations,” the newspaper declared. “Should not we in Britain, therefore, take this opportunity to ask the Americans to take over from us the Palestine mandate in the interests of humanity? Their resources are amply adequate to the task. It must make a powerful appeal to the sympathies of the American people. Britain should now approach Roosevelt, in response to his suggestions, and offer the mandate to him.”
