The first Jewish war memorial in this country was unveiled and consecrated here yesterday in the garden on the lawn in front of the Willesden Jewish Cemetery. Many leading civic and Jewish community leaders, as well as representatives of military and diplomatic missions to Britain participated in the solemn ceremonies.
Inspired by the Association of Jewish Ex-Servicemen, the memorial was erected by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, and the design was approved by the United Synagogue. The memorial is dedicated to the thousands of Jewish men and women who lost their lives in the two world wars and who have no known resting place. Field Marshal Sir Gerald Templer and Chief Rabbi Israel Brodie participated in the dedication and consecration. About 1,000 Jewish war veterans attended, in addition to several hundred relatives of Jewish war dead.
