Benjamin Franklin’s letter to his nephew expressing the hope that America would become “the asylum of all the oppressed in Europe” has been presented to the American Jewish Historical Society by Louis Bamberger, of Newark, it was announced today.

The letter was accepted by Dr. A.S.W. Rosonbach, president of the society. It will be placed in the society’s rooms in the Jewish Theological Seminary building. The letter is dated May 27, 1777, from Paris and addressed to Jonathan Williams, a Boston merchant.
