Israel’s insistence on obtaining formal reaffirmation of its right to freedom of passage through the Suez Canal is expected to result in action here very soon through a demand by the French Government that the Security Council convene again to re-examine the Suez Canal issue.
A report from Paris said that French Premier Guy Mollet met for an hour today with Israeli Ambassador Jacob Tsur. It is assumed here that they were coordinating policies on Israel’s plan to dispatch a test ship through the Suez Canal.
Word was also received here today from Paris that the French Government will ask for a meeting of the Council during which France will accuse Egypt of having side-stepped the basic principles regarding operation of the canal adopted by the Council on October 13 last.
Among the principles which France will cite is one that orders Egypt to practice no discrimination in regard to passage through the canal “overt or covert,” and another which establishes the Council rule that the canal should be “insulated from the politics of any country.”
