General Josef Haller of Poland was given an official reception at City Hall this morning, Acting Mayor Hulbert and the Mayor’s Committee being apparently oblivious of the protests in Boston and other parts of the country against the Polish General as the alleged instigator of anti-Jewish riots in Poland a few years ago.
The General who commanded the Polish forces in France among whom were many Polish recruits raised in America, was the guest here of the American Legion and the Polish Community. He was met at the Pennsylvania Station by the Mayor’s Committee, whence he was escorted to the
Waldorf Astoria and then to City Hall where he was welcomed by Acting Mayor Hulbert. The Firemen’s Band played in the General’s honor, City Hall Park was carefully cleared of intruders, the General facing only a battery of moving picture and news cameras as he emerged from the Mayor’s Chamber. Several hundred office workers, on their luncheon period, lined parts of City Hall Park which were accessible to the public. The General and his party were whisked away in municipal cars, displaying the Polish banner besides the Stars and Stripes. From the City Hall the General and his party proceeded to the Waldorf Astoria where a luncheon was given in his honor.
