The Bremen Senate today approved an allocation of 1,500,000 marks out of indemnification funds for the construction of a new synagogue and a new old age home. Plans of Architect Karl Gerle provide for a 140-seat prayer room, a mikveh, classrooms, a library and a seven-room home for the aged.
The municipal council in the small town of Hof, in the Franconian section of Bavaria, voted unanimously today to contribute land and to guarantee a fund of 63,000 deutsche-marks for the construction of a new synagogue.
An appeal issued by the Mayor of the town, Hans Hoegn, urged all residents of Hof “who more or less willingly became guilty of the crimes of Crystal Night, November II, 1938,” to contribute to the building fund. “Crystal Night” was the infamous night when, under Nazi orders, synagogues and Jewish business establishments were wrecked by Nazi hooligans throughout Germany.
