Murray 1. Gurfein, president of United Hias Service, was elected president of INTERCO, the International Council on Jewish Social and Welfare Services. The announcement was made today by Charles H. Jordan, INTERCO secretary-general and director-general of the Joint Distribution Committee, at a luncheon meeting held at the Harmonie Club. Among these present at the luncheon was Ambassador James Roosevelt, member of the U.S. Mission to the United Nations, who expressed his congratulations to Mr. Gurfein and brought greetings from Ambassador Arthur Goldberg.
INTERCO, which has consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council, is comprised of six major international Jewish social and welfare agencies including the Central British Fund for Relief and Rehabilitation, Jewish Colonization Association, Standing Conference on European Jewish Community Services, World CRT Union, in addition to the Joint Distribution Committee and United Hias Service. As INTERCO president, Mr. Gurfein succeeds H. Oscar Joseph, of London, chairman of the Central British Fund.
