Religious services on the High Holy Days will be held at Ellis Island for Jewish immigrants and deportees detained there, Isaac L. Asofsky, general manager of the Hebrew Sheltering and Immigrant Aid Society of America (HIAS) announced yesterday.
Rudolph Roemer, Commissioner of Immigration at Ellis Island, has set apart a room which will be transformed into a synagogue. HIAS has undertaken to provide the necessary paraphernalia. Special Holy Day food will be furnished, Mr. Asofsky said.
HIAS has again prevailed upon the Commissioner not to deport any Jewish alien on the High Holy Days. Immigration inspectors will be instructed to facilitate the landing of all Jewish immigrants the day prior to the Holy Days so as to enable them to join their families in this country.
Immigrants whose destinations are cities outside of New York will be provided for by HIAS in its Home in New York City where religious services will be held. Jewish unemployed and homeless who are being fed and sheltered by the society, will also be given an opportunity to participate in services, it was announced.
