than ever there. With regard to Hitler’s optimistic opinion that Germany would overcome the forces of the anti-Nazi boycott, all appeared to be in agreement. The Friends of New Germany were called upon to redouble their activities to overcome the boycott.

DISARM ENEMIES OF REICH

McLaughlin described Hitler’s declamation as “a masterly speech engagingly frank—so much so as to disarm the enemies of Germany.” He explained that in all politics there is bound to be a “right and left movement, and Germany’s left appeared to have personal rather than common interests at heart.”

Schnuch outlined the policies of the Friends of New Germany to his audience and called upon them to give the movement even greater support to make Hitler’s dream of conquering the boycott come true.

During Hitler’s broadcast, virtually all Yorkville tuned in radio sets on the explanation. Crowds gathered on Eighty-sixth street and main thoroughfares to hear the Chancellor, and during the period of his address business was largely forgotten.

LOCAL GERMANS HOLD OWN OPINION

So far as could be seen by the casual observer sentiment was divided as to the merits of the speech. It was evident that Nazis were somewhat shaken in their belief in the “Nazi Bloodless Revolution.” Comment from Nazi listeners was somewhat more restrained than usual, and the fire usually kindled by the Chancellor’s addresses failed to glow.
