The Indian government, reversing a rankling policy of longstanding, announced Wednesday that the India-Israel Davis Cup tennis matches would be played in New Delhi in July. The announcement overturned a previous ruling that visas would not be granted the Israeli players.
The Israel Tennis Federation was informed Wednesday morning that the major shift in policy was announced by a spokesman for the Indian Foreign Ministry. Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi gave his approval after having previously barred the Israeli tennis team from entering India for a world championship tournament last February.
