The 1973 International Jerusalem Prize has been awarded to Eugene Ionescu, the Rumanian playwright and philosopher. The $2000 prize will be presented to Ionescu by Mayor Teddy Kollek when the biennial Jerusalem International Book Fair is held here between April 25-30. Ionescu is the sixth winner of the award. He was selected by a panel of Israeli men-of-letters for his contributions to the idea of individual freedom in society. Ionescu is the creator of the Theater of the Absurd and has had a universal impact on contemporary drama. One of his best known plays, “Rhinoceros,” written in 1959, deals with the dehumanization of man and the struggle against totalitarianism.
