In a world torn by dissension and conflict of interests the best guarantee of Israel’s future lies in her own strength, Meir Argov, chairman of the Israel Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, declared here last night at a reception given in his honor by the British Poale Zion party.

Israel’s leaders are fully alive to the dangers facing the Jewish State in the current world situation and are keeping the problem of security uppermost in their minds, Mr. Argov declared. He insisted that the state could ” tackle its economic difficulties” if peaceful conditions prevailed in the world and in the Middle East.

In an appeal to British Jewry to accept greater responsibility for the fate and future of Israel, Mr. Argov warned against taking the ” existence of the State for granted. The battle for survival and progress is as much the responsibility of Diaspora Jewry as that of the people of Israel.”

The Knesset leader, who is also general secretary of the Mapai Party, spoke of the Laborites’ concern for the problem of Jews outside Israel, but at the same time appealed for a ” stream” of Jewish youth from abroad to come to Israel and help build the state.

A message from the British Labor Party to the reception expressed confidence that Mr. Argov’s visit to England would help foster better relations between the British and the Israeli Labor parties.
