The Israel Philharmonic Orchestra will make a four-week tour of the United States and Canada, beginning with a concert in New York July 29, for the benefit of the Israel Emergency Fund, it was announced here today by Columbia Artists Management. There will be at least three concerts in New York at Philharmonic Hall of the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, and possibly a fourth appearance, free, at Sheep Meadow, in Central Park.
The orchestra will tour 28 cities in North America, and its itinerary will include a concert in the Hollywood Bowl. Conductors and soloists thus far lined up, or being contacted for appearance with the orchestra, will include some of the world’s most noted artists, including William Steinberg, Zubin Mehta, Eugene Ormandy, Charles Munch, Seiji Ozawa, Leonard Bernstein, Rudolf Serkin, Jacqueline Du Pre, and Daniel Barenboim.
According to Ronald Wilford, who is in charge of the tour for Columbia Artists, the initiative for booking such a tour had been taken by Mr. Steinberg. Mr. Wilford said that none of the members of the orchestra, or the conductors or soloists are to be paid for their services, while Columbia Artists will charge no commissions.
