Israel resumed contact with the Palestinian Authority. Wednesday’s decision by Prime Minister Ariel Sharon’s Security Cabinet came several days after Sharon suspended contacts with the Palestinian Authority following a deadly attack on Israelis in the Gaza Strip.

A U.N. General Assembly session commemorating the liberation of Nazi death camps is significant because the world body grew out of the Holocaust’s ashes, Kofi Annan said. “The founding of this organization was a direct response to the Holocaust,” the U.N. secretary-general said during a news conference Wednesday with Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, Dan Gillerman, and representatives of other nations that back the gathering.
