Israel will act through the United Nations to secure the withdrawal of Iraqi troops from the Syrian-Israeli border if such troops will be stationed there as a result of the unification of the armed forces of Syria and Iraq under a joint command. Should diplomatic efforts not bring about the withdrawal of the Iraqi units, Israel will seek other steps to ensure their withdrawal.
Indications to this effect were given here today in political quarters. Iraq had refused to sign an armistice agreement with Israel in 1949, when such pacts had been signed by Egypt, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon. Iraq contended at that time that no Iraqi-Israeli armistice agreement was needed, since the two countries had no common border. Yesterday, the Iraqi Minister of War declared that Syria’s armistice pact with Israel does not affect Iraq. Iraq and Syria announced last week the unification of their military forces.
