Chief Rabbi Isser Unterman said yesterday that he was confident Halacha, Jewish religious law, would find a solution to the problem of determining the status of Soviet Jewish couples of mixed marriage if and when they immigrated to Israel. The Chief Rabbi spoke at the opening session of a conference on oral law.
He said the halachic problem would be solved in light of “the facts of the situation” prevailing in Russia but added that the task “is not as simple as in the days of Ezra who, we are told, made sure of the genealogy of the Jews in Babylon before he led them back to Israel.”
