Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon delayed a budget vote, hoping to secure support from religious parties. Though an informal tally indicated a majority in the Knesset would pass the 2002 budget, Sharon put off the vote to seek the support of the religious parties, which are opposed to plans to cut stipends for large families.
