Chanukah will be celebrated by more than 300 Y. M. H. A. ‘s, Y. W. H. A. ‘s and Jewish community centers throughout the United States beginning Tuesday evening, Dec. 24, and extending to Wednesday, Jan. 1. Special invitations have been addressed to Jewish soldiers and sailors to attend these festivities in communities adjacent to Army posts and naval training stations, it was announced by the Jewish Welfare Board.
Meanwhile, Jewish soldiers stationed at Fort Dix, New Jersey, have presented an unusual Christmas present to their Christian fellows at the post, it was revealed in an announcement of Christmas furloughs made by General Clifford R. Powell, commanding officer at the fort. The Jewish soldiers have offered to waive their eligibility for furloughs to make it possible for more soldiers of the Protestant and Catholic faiths to obtain holidays during the Christmas season.
The Jewish men revealed their willingness to give up their eligibility for a holiday through Chaplain Bernard Siegel, the Jewish chaplain at the post. At least 25 per cent of the 44th Division, which is stationed at Fort Dix, must remain in camp at all times. There are some 800 Jewish men in the division.
The Jewish Education Committee’s annual Chanukah Dinner will be held Sunday evening at the Hotal Astor. Speakers will include Justice Samuel I. Rosenman, president; Harry H. Liebovitz, vice-president; Dr. Alexander M. Dushkin, executive director, and Bernard Semel, a member of the board. Frederick F. Greenman will preside.
One of the finest collections of Chanukah lamps is in the Museum of Ceremonial and Art Objects of the Jewish Theological Seminary and is on view every day, except Friday and Saturday.
