Sophie Irene Loeb, chairman of the Child Welfare Committee of America, and Judge Algernon I. Nova, president of the Brooklyn Hebrew Orphan Asylum, will be the principal speakers at a public meeting to be held Sunday afternoon at the Brooklyn Hebrew Orphan Asylum, at which the problem of child welfare in Brooklyn will be discussed.
The meeting is being held in connection with the campaign of the asylum to place approximately 300 orphans in foster homes in Brooklyn and Long Island.
Nine thousand dollars from Samuel Untermyer headed the additional contributions reported Wednesday to Judge Joseph M. Proskauer, chairman of the Y. M. H. A. $1,500,000 Building Fund Campaign, at a luncheon of workers held at the Biltmore Hotel.
The new contributions announced included $250 from Chief Justice Benjamin N. Cardoza, of the New York State Court of Appeals, $1,000 from Adolph Lewisohn, and $500 from former Supreme Court Justice Samuel Greenbaum.
The total reported yesterday was $30,600, bringing the total thus far to $941,950.
The names of more than thirty thousand contributors to the Federation for the Support of Jewish Philanthropic Societies will be included in the Federation’s membership list which will be published this Spring, according to an announcement by Sol M. Stroock, president of the organization.
Two years ago, when the last membership list was issued, it contained 25,000 names of persons who contributed a total of $4,000,000 toward the support of the ninety-one affiliated agencies of the Federation. In announcing the decision to publish the book again this year, Mr. Stroock estimated that the Federation includes agencies performing more than eighty per cent of the Jewish social service in New York and that the Federation has raised upwards of $32,000,000 for this work during the ten years of its existence. By 1926 the amount raised had increased to $4,720,000 and the number of contributors has passed the 30,000 mark.
The book will contain, in addition to the membership roster, a financial chart showing the growth of the Federation: an accounting of the distribution of funds to the individual institutions; a listing of the members of the Business Men’s Council, and a description of the work of the constituent societies.
