A new use for two of the wonder drags–Cortisone and ACTH–in the treatment of the very deadly disease, pemphigus, was reported today by Dr. David I. Macht of Sinai Hospital, Baltimore, at the 44th annual meeting of the Southern Medical Association held here. Pemphigus is an inflammatery disease marked by blotches on the skin and mucuos membranes.
Dr. Macht reported “definite hope of saving or prolonging the lives of patients suffering from pemphigus,” one of the oldest diseases known to mankind, and the disease, according to Dr. Macht, with which Job was afflicted. Dr. Macht reported that the use of Cortisone and ACTH has been successful in reducing the toxicity of pemphigus in patients.
