Leon Jolson a former refugee who came to the United States only six years ago, yesterday announced that he had established a $250,000 foundation to promote better understanding among Americans of different races, creeds and backgrounds so that “what has happened in Europe will never happen here.”
Mr. Jolson’s announcement, on the first anniversary of his naturalization as an American citizen, spoke of the establishment of the foundation as a gift to American democracy which he said had made possible his great business success. Penniless at the time of his arrival, Mr. Jolson received a $2,000 loan from the United Service for New Americans with which he set up a sales organization for the Italian-manufactured Necchi sewing machine.
