All Jewish pupils in State high schools were temporarily dismissed today pending allotment of special Jewish schools, thus completing the Austrian Nazi regime’s anti-Jewish legislation in the educational field.

Special patrols of the S.S. (Schutz Staffel or elite guard) appeared in the streets to protect Jewish shops against unauthorized attacks and defacement. The creation of the patrols was announced last night on the radio, but was not mentioned in the press.

The patrols wore yellow armlets above their swastika bands. Their appointment by Joseph Buerckel, Reichs Commissar for Direction of Reun on of Austria with Germany, following his return here from Berlin, was apparently in line with opinions here and resulted from criticism of last weekends’ violent anti-Jewish boycott.

a purge in the ranks of the Nazi Party, or at least a shifting of membership, is expected to occur here.

In the last two days most Jewish merchants have received permission to wash off the signs, “Jude” (Jew), painted on their shopwindows by Nazis and to replace them with printed cards. In some cases, however, the signs were painted with tar and are unremovable.

The anti-Jewish demonstrations inflicted heavy casualties on Jewish businesses, as was undoubtedly intended. The Mozart and Bristol cafes were taken over by “Aryans,” as was the popular Expresso Restaurant.

One clothing store specializing in English modes is now announcing that its women’s department is “Aryan” while its men’s clothing department is still Jewish. The Vienna Public Baths announced that Jews are no longer admitted.

Jewish scholars are bewailing the loss of some 10,000 volumes, including old and rare examples of Hebraic and rabbinical literature, comprising the library of the Jewish Theological Seminary, which was removed by storm troopers.
