Tomorrow, Sunday, December 21st, will be a day of great events for the Jewish community here. All preparations have been completed for the Biennial Convention of the Jewish Welfare Board, which will be opened here tomorrow.
The Jewish Welfare Board was organized in 1917, to carry on the Welfare activities for the Jewish men in the service. This work it is still doing, laying special emphasis on the service to disabled veterans.
The work includes the conduct of religious services, the observance of the Holy Days, the distribution of prayer books, and any other Jewish activities.
In 1921 the Jewish Welfare Board was merged with the National Council of Y. M. and Y. W. H. A.’s, and thus became the national organization for the Jewish Center movement. This was a natural development since the “Y”‘s during the war in most cases were changed into Jewish Welfare Board Organizations. Since that time, the Jewish Welfare Board has been furthering the Jewish Centre idea throughout the country and has been meeting with the greatest success. It has helped make the “Y” a real community center and a vital force in American Jewish life through intelligent direction and advice. There are more than 300 associated organizations in the United States and Canada. During the past two and one-half years, thirteen organizations have acquired their own buildings with the assistance of the J.W.B.
Men prominent in Jewish affairs throughout the country will address the Conference. The principal speakers will be Judge Irving Lehman, Louis Marshall. Felix Warburg of New York, Hon. Alfred M. Cohen of Cincinnati, Dr. Cyrus Adler, President of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America and Judge Horace Stern of Philadelphia.
On the same day the American Jewish Committee will hold an Executive Session of its Board of Directors and the Pennsylvania Federation of Young Men’s and Young Women’s Hebrew Associations has called a special conference. About thirty delegates are expected to be present.
The Eastern States Debating League, consisting of representatives from six states have also arranged for a special conference on Sunday.
A special feature of the Convention will be the banquet which will take place at 6:30 P.M. At this banquet the delegates will be the guests of the Jewish community of this city.
Dr. Cyru Adler will act as toastmaster.
