Jewish leaders here today expressed satisfaction over the fact that the executive committee of the Allied Council for Austria unanimously vetoed a law passed by the Austrian Parliament on July 17 which would have required non-resident owners of restituted property to return the property to the “Aryanizers” at prices fixed by the Austrian courts. The law also would have granted certain other advantages to former “Aryan” holders of restituted Jewish property.
(In New York, the American Jewish Committee received a message of thanks from the Vienna Jewish Community Council for its efforts in Washington in behalf of the veto. The American Jewish Congress issued a statement hailing the Allied Council’s action.)
The Council also unanimously approved three laws governing compensation to victims of Nazism. However, it informed the Austrian Chancellor that these laws did not fully compensate the victims of political persecution since they discriminated against non-residents of Austria. The Chancellor was invited to submit to Parliament within six months the draft of a law granting adequate compensation regardless of the nationality of the victim of persecution.
