The Jewish central Committee here sent a protest to the British military tribunal at Lueneburg and to the barristers association in England expressing indignation at the speech of British defense attorney Major Claude Winwood, who described the victims of the Belsen camp as “dregs of the ghettos.”
“On behalf of tens of thousands of innocent Jews cruelly murdered in Belsen, the Jewish Committee expresses its protest against dishonoring their memory,” the statement reads. “The Jewish Committee declares that the Jews exterminated in the escaps of Oswiecim and Belsen were brought there in masses and included the best representatives of Jewish culture, art, religion, and science. There were among them rabbis, physicians, engineers and social workers. All attempts to justify the action of the cruel executioners must provoke indignation and condemnation from the entire civilized world.”
