American Jewry will honor Denmark and Sweden next October in commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the rescue of Danish Jews from the Nazis. The Jews, whom the Gestapo had marked for deportation, were transported from occupied Denmark to Sweden in small boats under cover of darkness, in October, 1943, an operation in which many Danes and Swedes risked their lives.
Sol. M. Linowitz, United States Ambassador to the Organization of American States, and Victor Borge, the Danish-American entertainer, have been named co-chairman of the American Jewish community’s salute to Denmark and Sweden. Mr. Borge, a pianist, will perform at Philharmonic Hall, Lincoln Center, on Oct. 20 in the company of other Scandinavian artists. The concert will benefit the Thanks to Scandinavia Foundation which provides scholarships for Scandinavian youths in appreciation of their countries’ courage in aiding Jews during World War II.
