The entire Jewish community of Bulgaria is greatly agitated today as a result of the proposal of a new law to deprive minorities in Bulgaria of their national status.
If passed, this law would, in effect, make of the Jewish community only a religious minority, depriving the Jews of whatever measure of autonomy in internal Jewish life they at present possess.
This law would mean the intervention of the government in the financial affairs of the Jewish community. It would probably result in the complete abolition of all Jewish schools in Bulgaria.
A special conference of Bulgarian Jewish communities took place here today to discuss the newly created situation and to work out a way of combatting the proposed law. It was decided to send a special delegation to the Bulgarian government with the request that the national status of the Jewish minority be maintained.
