Nathan S. Jonas, founder and first president of the Brooklyn Federation of Jewish Charities who is at Coral Gables, Florida recuperating from an illness, sent a message to the Federation yesterday urging residents of Manhattan and the Bronx to unite with Brooklynites in supporting the Brooklyn Jewish community chest’s $500,000 campaign to meet the budget of its twenty-five constituent societies. The message was received on the occasion of the celebration of the twenty-fifth anniversary of the founding of the Federation, now being observed.
Mr. Jonas pointed out that while the Jewish population of Brooklyn was 361,000 when the Brooklyn Federation was founded in 1909, and that of Manhattan and the Bronx was then 696,000, today the Jewish population of Brooklyn exceeds one million and represents more than fifty per cent of the entire Jewish population of all five boroughs. The Federation, despite the fact that it has approximately half of the entire burden of dependents, was able to raise but $412,370 last year.
The Federation is now in the third week of its $500,000 twenty-fifth anniversary campaign, under the chairmanship of County Judge Algernon I. Nova. The $500,000 represents the 1934 budget of the Federation and includes receipts from annual subscriptions as well as income from other sources, including the Women’s Division and the Junior Federation.
