A bomb exploded this afternoon in the stairwell of the 19th floor of the midtown building that houses Amtorg, the Soviet trading corporation. No one was injured and damage was reported to be minor. A second, unexploded device was found by police in the stairwell of the 20th floor. The police were alerted by a phone call at 5:10 p.m. twenty minutes before the explosion A phone call to the local police precinct warned “Five grenades have been placed in the offices of Amtorg. Let my people go.” The police phoned Amtorg and warned them to evacuate the building.
